Did You Know 3.0?

I came across the third and latest version of the popular “Shift Happens/Did You Know?” video by Karl Fisch and Scot McLeod.  I have enjoyed viewing the previous versions and thought it is a great educational video for students.  This version was released in late 2008 with updated statistics and a much better visual presentation.

Someone say, this world start from one huge explosion. After thousand years evolution, we have culture and knowledge. But information always be limited due to communicated tool.
Someone say, this new world start from information exlosion due to internet as free way of infomation. At present, generation to generation is just few years or few months due to information spreading speed is fast and fast. After this vedio, we really need to think what will be next world.

    看完了Did You Know 3.0?

Ok, I am already looking forward to Did You Know 4.0 because I watched the 3.0 version a few years ago and really enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, after watching it, I passed it on to our superintendent who requested that we watch it at our districtwide staff development day before school starts. It is a sobering remember of our place in the technology world as well as our place in the international marketplace, population, and educational environment.

In truth, I don’t think all of the information is presented in the truest light. Certainly they have value but you aren’t necessarily comparing apples to apples when you compare our educational system versus other countries. For instance, our government says that we have to educate EVERY student (No Child Left Behind) while others only educate students that perform well in school or test well at certain key points along their educational age. They move students out of the educational/college prep scenario earlier than we do and this process can skew comparison statistics.

Other parts of the videos are spot on though and certainly thought-provoking. It does challenge viewers to rethink common misconceptions about possibilities for technology and the future as well as our place in it.

  8. I think it is safe to say we are currently experiencing once of the largest revolutions that America has ever known—the information revolution. As an American, I am concerned about our governmental figures’ beliefs, tactics, and morals, and am well aware that the “American Empire” may come to a crash sooner than we may want to admit. That said, like Dane mentioned, I don’t believe absolutely all of these assumptions are necessarily valid. While it does shed interesting light on many topics, it reminds me that America isn’t running as tight a race as we’d like to think. If the facts, indeed, are true, it is interesting to me that India is growing at a much faster rate than China (not to mention the U.S.). While the “American way” is not to be outdone, I believe we’ve got a lot coming for us in the next decade (or less). Collaborative efforts on all parties could combine for the good of mankind as a whole, but I am doubtful about the odds of that.

Either way, I do agree that this presentation was very thought-provoking. I am interested to discover in a few years how much of the presentation proved to be accurate, or how close these estimates were to the truth.
